Carnival Costume!!!

This year I am playing in Fantasy Band for Carnival. I will be wearing this.... I will have to act like this.... But I completely believe in this....

Steel Pan and a Good Time.

Being a Trinidadian you must have gotten some exposure to our national instrument the Steel Pan. It is an instrument that is Caribbean based and the background music for most of our local calypso music. Just like piano it has its specific keys to hit to get different tones, but it is played like if you are beating a drum set. It really is an instrument of it own kind and in my country, around Carnival, we listen to an orchestra of steel band players create the melody of one of our calypsos. I personally enjoy pan only 'live and direct'. It is not something I will listen to on the radio, but as a teacher I am constantly hearing in being practiced from the Music room. The kids really enjoy learning it, and as I said before, it being our national instrument, the Ministry of Education is implementing it into the music curriculum so that every child learns to appreciate the instrument. This is a good thing. Yesterday was our Pan Semi Finals, where Steel Pan Bands of all si

This is what happens when you get sidetracked...

Have you ever wish you could get a better closet and set off with the intentions of finding the perfect picture... but get sidetrack along the way. Well courtesy of "California Closets" on Facebook, I went from looking at these... To wanting a library like this.... To wanting a back yard like this.... And a Bedroom like this.... Now to get back to reality and just look at closet pictures :( Have a great weekend everyone!

WW - They say she looks like me.

When my son was born he was the splitting image of his father ... and still is.  When my little girl was born they say she looks like me.... I am still questioning that??? What do you think??

She called her 'Gan'

My mother when she was a little girl, was dressed in a crown of flowers, a new dress and shoes and went to throw petals at the feet of her grandmother at the Santa Rosa Festival in Trinidad. You see her grandmother was a Carib Queen and every year they celebrated this Catholic festival in Arima, Trindad. I have never experienced this and though the Carib bloodline is being passed on through me, there is not much I can say about my heritage. In jest I would tell other who ask what I am mixed with, I would say "my people were here first... we did not arrive by boat... we were natives." But I really do not know what that really means. I do not know how to live off the land. In fact I kill all plants and animals that enter my home. I should put a sign ... "Enter at your own risk!" But I do want to understand this particular part of my ancestry. Although I am mixed with Chinese, Spanish, Scottish and Protégées, I have always been curious of the one culture that was h

Inspiring Friday.

A little juice for the soul. Now a little something to make you smile... well it did for me.

To say or not to say...

Did you ever find yourself in a position where you want to say something to someone but feel as if you cannot because you know it will make the relationship between you and that person uncomfortable?? I know my mother would tell me, "if the problem cannot be resolved and the person stops taking to you, then that person was not your friend to begin with and then.. no love loss". But what if that person is your neighbor... your work colleague ... or someone you saw on a daily basis... and you have no control over how often you see them. Do you bite lip and hope that the situation gets better all on its own... or do you ignore the person in the hopes that they will be able to interpret your silence. I know my mother would tell me, "sometimes you have to know when to pick your battles." But what if that battle came to you and you were not the one who instigated it in the first place. What if you said something that was completely honest but the person took offen

A Parent's Concern!!

Should I be concerned that my 8 year old is playing War games and Violent games on FREE apps on his new android 'tablet'!!!???  I say YES. I remember as a kid my mother censoring everything we looked at and played. I remember not being able to watch scary movies till I was a teenager. I remember not having such EASY exposure to shows and games that filled the eyes and mind with violence such as .... chopping Vampires and killing Zombies!!! A fall person jumping off the top of a tall building and spilling blood every time he hits something on the way down!!! A tip of a shooting riffle aiming at a zebra as you try to kill it with one SHOT!!! I knew when getting this 'tablet' that I had to monitor the apps he downloads, but when you really check to see how much violent apps there are out there you understand why so many teenagers and younger kids are susceptible to violent and inconsiderate acts. It saddened my heart when I heard of the little innocent kids who wer

Do's and Don't for 2013

For the new year I have come up with a plan to try and make my life less complicated. I want to make the best decisions possible for me and my family. I also have to make sure and stand my ground and not let others take advantage of me. You see I am one of those people who try to help others and as time goes by I realize I am the one doing all the work and the other party doing nothing. This over time become a burden to me. Because in life I really believe people get what they deserve and they also have to earn respect and make the effort to help. If the other party is not doing anything, then I think I am going to get off this one way street... FAST!! As for making the right decisions, both financial and personal, it has to benefit both me and my family. I am no longer going to throw caution to the wind. I am going to set a budget to provide financial stability (i.e. not give money away to the hairdresser who did not do a good job... and buy toys from stores that are over priced!!
